The Women Make Waves International Film Festival, Taiwan was established by feminist scholars, moving image researchers, and filmmakers, and is currently one of Taiwan’s largest and most significant film festivals to promote film, moving image and gender awareness. This year’s Women Make Waves NYCU Tour is titled ‘Blazing Histories: Movements Transformed’, and speaks to the fiery, powerful paths forged by women, queer, and transgender individuals creating their own narratives of history. While these histories appear blazing onto and through moving images, the social and activist movements that generate these images are also informed and transformed by trans experience, and serve to fundamentally reconsider our understandings of aesthetics and politics in themselves. Themes running through this year’s tour film selection range from grassroots resistance and protest, to Cold War memory, to refugee and diasporic experience, to minority group histories, to the power of arts and cultural movements. This tour presents 16 screenings of feature length and short films presented by eight invited speakers, with seven post-screening discussions throughout the tour. Through screenings and discussion, the tour aims to speak to the fluidity, complexity, and profundity of moving image and gender issues across different contexts.
